As we turn the corner on the holiday season and enter a new year, many of us reflect on the running milestones we’ve achieved and set goals for the future. Bernd Heinrich, a renowned biologist, and runner, explores these themes in his book Racing the Clock: Running Across a Lifetime, reflecting on his life, the effects of aging on the body, and the profound impact running has had on him.
Heinrich was born in a secluded area of northern Germany before his family relocated to the United States, eventually settling in rural Maine. These early experiences cultivated Heinrich’s interest in biology—particularly insects, birds, wildlife, and ecology. He discovered his talent for running after joining his school’s cross-country team. His natural ability quickly developed, making him the best runner in his school and one of the top runners in Maine. Running also provided Heinrich with a meaningful social outlet.
Throughout the book, Heinrich intertwines discussions about running with insights from his scientific studies. For example, he examines how moths and bees have distinct blood flow patterns synchronized with their breathing. His deep understanding of metabolism, temperature regulation, and endurance later proved invaluable when he pursued marathons and ultra-marathons. Heinrich candidly shares both his setbacks and his major achievements over the years.
Now in his eighties, Heinrich continues to run and has even completed a 50-kilometer trail race at this age. Through his experiences, he imparts valuable lessons about aging gracefully, transitioning through life’s phases, and maintaining optimism. This is a great book for runners that are building their own lifelong running journeys.
