Brina Seguine - Athlete of the Month

What is your age, occupation, background, hobbies, and other sports?

I am 33 years young and I’m a first grade teaching assistant. I was born in Rensselaer/East Greenbush. I ran on the Columbia High School Varsity XC and track teams 7-12th grades and the Siena College Varsity XC team all four years.  I run for ARE, shoot pool, and write poems for The Pace Setter. (She has been dubbed the “Pace Setter Poet Laureate.”)

When and why did you start running?

I started running when I was 9 because I was signed up for the Kids’ Freihofer’s race but Bobby Hammond said I should do the 5K and I have been hooked since.  Also, my mom and dad liked watching me run.

What’s your favorite race to date, and why?

The Freihofer’s 5K is my favorite because it was my first 5K and it’s empowering to women.  The energy is amazing.

What is your approach to training? Do you follow a particular training plan, or do you work with a coach and if so, who?

My approach is not too many rest days.  I do the workout posted by Dick Vincent on Tuesday on my own, 2-3 miles of 30 second sprint/30 second jog usually on Thursday, race for 3-5 fast miles on Saturday usually long run on Sunday if I don’t race, and easy days for the rest.  I also go to Planet Fitness or use dumbells 20-30 minutes 3 days a week.

What is your weekly mileage in peak racing/marathon training season? What is your approach to the off season?

In peak season I run 5-8 miles a day but ten plus on long runs.  I try to keep on the higher end of my mileage per day range.  Off season, I subtract either the Thursday or Saturday  hard run and run easy instead.

During our cold winter days, do you brave poor weather conditions or stick indoors on the treadmill?

I will run outside until it dips below the teens and/pr it is icy and snowy.  When I run in the cold, I make sure I am dressed warm.

List your PRs: Race, time, year:

5K-17:59 Freihofer’s Run for Women 200; Half marathon-1:35:46 Syracuse Half (2012), 15K-Boilermaker 57:19 2007; 10K-Troy Turkey Trot 37:57 2003.

What is your favorite distance?

Any distance between a 5K and a half marathon.

Your favorite shoe for training and racing

I might be biased but Asics hands down.

Ever run in a costume?

No, but I may want to run in a cat costume. I love cats. LOL!

What are your favorite pre-race and post-race meals?

Anything with pasta pre-race and post race, anything!

What challenges / races / adventures are you planning for the coming year?

I would like to do some half-marathons along with 5Ks like the Freihofer’s Run for Women and the Valley Cats Home Run Derby.

What is the greatest piece of advice you've ever received in the sport?

Do your best and never give up!
