2022 Stockade-athon 15K: Lou Serafini Crushes Course Again

The Stockade-athon is popularly recognized as the oldest "major" 15K road race in the USA, starting in 1976. This classic 9.3 miler has become the highlight event on the fall racing season in Upstate New York and has runners from across the US and the world race it.

This year, the Stockade-athon was graced by Roger Robinson, a writer, emeritus professor, record setting runner, and husband of Kathrine Switzer (What It's Like to Be Married to a Legend - Runner's World):

The Stockade-athon 15K at Schenectady, NY, proved a perfect end to my American season. The field of 1,100 meant there was company and challenge, but no overcrowding, which in today’s bigger events is a major problem for competitive age-group runners. The course was varied and interesting, with some hills, a park and lake, a cemetery, and the historic Stockade district. Enthusiastic volunteers marshalled at every intersection, impeccable race management. The sponsor MVP Health Care even handed out free gloves before the start, a first, and very welcome. Thank you. And the YMCA facility pre and post race is superlative - changing space! seating! warm showers! easy bag check! instant results! I got an 80-plus PR of 1:21:30, 8:45 per mile/ 5:26 per km, which won the small group by a good margin. Congrats also to my friend Dennis Moore, still improving relative to age, second M75 (1:19:36) behind the phenomenal Dave Glass (1:09:31). This race had Norman Green, Ed Whitlock and Fay Bradley among past age winners, but it’s cutting edge as well as historic.

We thank him for his kind comments and wonder if his wife was with him in Schenectady.

The Stockade-athon features:

  • A safe and secure, USATF-sanctioned 15K course through Schenectady’s historic Stockade district, beautiful Central Park, and the historic Vale Cemetery.
  • Low entry fees compared to comparable events.
  • $5,000 is prize money for open, master, and team runners.
  • 15 age-group categories for first, second, and third-place male and female finishers.
  • Hot and cold post-race refreshments.
