XC Country Extreme Challenge Waiting for You

On a beautiful summer night, unbelievably with not a raincloud in sight, the first in the HMRRC Tawasentha XC (5K) 2021 series took place under the guidance of John Kinnicut.  People talked in groups expectantly and greeted old friends they had not seen since the pandemic began.  Marey Bailey, a fixture at the registration desk, was there to make sure all went well. Things were back to normal, hallelujah.

Runners were pumped to begin this challenging race well aware of the obstacles it presents from steep hills, mud from the almost daily rainstorms, roots from trees, rocks, burrows from adorable little creatures that line the paths, to crossing a stream.  This obviously is a race for the bold.  No flat Macadam surfaces here.  The start demonstrates the no holds barred aspect of the race by starting with an ascent of a steep hill followed by crossing the same hill again.  After completing the double-hill-of-death defying segment, the group disappeared into the thick forest, not to be seen for at least twenty minutes.  It’s hard to top the drama of this start.

The race was full of challenges and ended on a high note. The first three winners were all males and then suddenly from the trees seeming like out of a fairy tale a group of three smiling, young people appeared not looking a mote tired and triumphantly crossing the finish line with two females coming in first and second.

The race series is free for HMRRC members as are runs in the coming Winter Series. (It’s hard to think of that now, but it will come.) During the pandemic many memberships have lapsed and it is now time to think of renewing them.  The HMRRC is a non-profit organization and due to its army of volunteers can plow its revenues into making running more accessible, better, and enjoyable in the Greater Albany Area.  If you go to our website and click on the Outreach folder, you will see the good things the organization does with your money for our running community.  The membership price is beyond reasonable: $12 for an individual; $15 for couples or families.
