Stockadeathon 2017 Update

Continued from home page

There are exciting changes afoot, though. A new relay competition for teams representing area businesses – the Stockade Cup -- will be offered for the first time in 2017. Each member of the 3-person teams (who need to be full-time employees) will run a 5K. Both male and female teams will compete for separate Cups. The 5K runners will get individual times for their legs, with open and masters prizes available for the fastest runners. Only 100 teams will be allowed to compete in 2017 while we test the viability of this new concept and work out the logistical details (e.g., buses will transport relay leg runners to the 5K and 10K locations and return runners who have completed their legs to the finish area).

A second change concerns prize money. The Stockadeathon will offer $7,500 in cash prizes to the top male, female, age-graded, and team finishers. The change is that the prize money will be limited to local finishers. “Local” is somewhat expansively defined. To receive a cash prize, a runner must reside in a specified New York county (Albany, Schenectady, Rensselaer, Greene, Columbia, Schoharie, Montgomery, Saratoga, Warren, Fulton, or Washington); Bennington County in Vermont, or Berkshire County in Massachusetts. Runners who are members of HMRRC qualify regardless of where they live, but must have been HMRRC members for at least 6 months.

Finally, refreshments and the awards ceremony will be moved to the Schenectady Y in 2017. The Y is closer to the finish line area, offers significantly larger space for food distribution purposes, and has ample seating in its gymnasium for the awards ceremony or just hanging out after the race.

Otherwise, the 2017 Stockadeathon will maintain the same high standards it’s been noted for in the past. Registrants (including relay leg runners) will receive long-sleeve tech shirts; chip timing will provide 5K and 10K splits, as well as net 15K times; 15 age groups for both males and females will offer 3-deep prizes, with ceramic cups for the first-place finishers; hot and cold refreshments will be available at the finish – and the cost to register is the same as in 2016.

Additional details are available at www.stockade-athon.com. Online registration opens on Thursday, June 15.
