WAPPINGERS FALLS -- From his cozy dwelling in that great stable in the sky, Secretariat surely smiled. A kindred spirit made history Saturday.
Bowdoin Park, site of the New York State Federation Cross Country Championship, will never be confused with Belmont. But there was no mistaking the transcendence of what transpired here, as Nicole Blood staged a profound run into the record books.
Blood, a Saratoga Springs High School junior, won her third Federation title in three years and stomped the course and meet record into a muddy pulp on a drizzly afternoon.
For one year, Blood agonized about coming 1.3 seconds from breaking the former record (17:56.6) at the 2003 meet. Small margins in long races are hard on the running psyche. That wasn't an issue this time.
Blood thought she would break the record "by a little bit." She did not think she would scale steep grades, trudge through mud, and run 5,000 meters past an elite field in 17 minutes, 27.3 seconds -- a half-minute faster than the old record, set by Saratoga's Erin Davis in 1993.
But she did.
"This was definitely one of my best races, especially because of the course and the conditions," said Blood, one of five top-10 finishers for the Blue Streaks, who produced the lowest team score (22 points), boys or girls, in the meet's 31-year history. "It's a big confidence-booster."
This meet is a proving ground of the highest order. Everyone is here. From Buffalo to the Hamptons. And no one -- not even Warwick Valley's Aislinn Ryan (17:40.2), who also beat the old record -- touched Blood.
Blood won by 13 seconds -- a margin best measured by furlongs, not yards. She emerged from the woods -- alone -- more than 100 yards ahead of Ryan. Her coach Art Kranick shouted as Blood neared the finish: "Look ... at ... the ... time!"
"With this performance, she's definitely among the greatest female distance runners in the history of high school cross country," said Linda Kranick, who coaches the team with her husband.
The day wasn't only Blood's. Her Blue Streaks team, the nation's best, scored 22 points, beating the previous record of 31, set by the 2000 Saratoga girls. The team of Hannah Davidson, Lindsey Ferguson, Caitlin Lane and Karyn Delay joined Blood in the top 10. Saratoga won for the fifth year in a row and 15th time in the past 16 years.
Blood pointed out that Davidson, who missed the old mark by less than two seconds, is a freshman.
Another notable run belonged to Guilderland sophomore Brian Rhodes-Davey, the top Section II boys finisher, who took ninth in 16:14.2. Rhodes-Davey battled pneumonia this fall but returned to improve on last year's 29th-place finish.
Among the girls teams, Shenendehowa (142) took second and Bethlehem (145) was third.
Among the boys, Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake finished third, Saratoga fourth, Shen sixth and Bethlehem ninth.
