Previous event winners in green!
Hello Wizards of Mountain Goatery,
If you are one of the lucky ones, there will be a photo of you crossing the finish line. Most years even you would have to look up your number to recognize yourself, but this year, with cooler temperatures and clear skies, almost everyone resembled a human being, and even themselves, at the finish line.
And the times, at least in the men's division, reflected it Ben Nephew not only nailed down his fifth consecutive win, but also sped under the previous course record set in 1995 by Matt Cull. Ben's 2:45:20 bested the old mark by 26 seconds. Ben did it by himself as he ran alone from Windham to the finish.
Sheryl Wheeler's time was not her fastest, but like Ben, she ran away from the rest of the competition as she was the only female to break 4 hours.
Although the skies were dry and the trail not terribly wet or muddy (although it was slick after it got churned up a little), there were the usual cuts, bumps, and bruises with Joe Reynolds suffering a couple of broken ribs. After a quick trip to the hospital he was sent home with strict orders not to laugh of sneeze for six weeks.
As usual the volunteers (at the start, finish, and in between) were outstanding, hauling in hundreds of pounds of drinks, first aid, and good cheer for us all. I heard one runner ask the folks at the top of Windham "where they came from to get here." Wow, was he surprised when the answer was, "From the same place you did". There were many memorable comments this year along the trail. Coming off Windham a runner said, "Hug a Tree, Save a Forest." Coming off Blackhead that same runner said "Hug a Tree and Save Your Darn Life!" How true it is.
With all the highlights of this year's race, what stands out the most to me though, was the absence of two wonderful people who have been a big part of this race for years. Damon Douglas and Harold Briggs both left us this year but their spirit remains with the mountains and the race. Harold who is a member of the Escarpment 100 mile club and has helped out at the finish the last few years, perished this past week. His friendship, his good will, and his readiness to help will be sorely missed. Damon Douglas ran this race 24 times and it was Damon who compiled and maintain the archives of the Escarpment since the beginning. He was a good friend and an avid mountain runner for 30 years and this year's race was dedicated to him. Damon's family and friends will disperse his ashes at North Point near the end of July. The spirits of these two wonderful individuals will remain with us forever. To Damon and Harold: You are already missed.
Thank you all very much for becoming such a big part of our summer. The Escarpment Family has expanded over the years to include people from all over the country and even the world. It is the highlight of our summer and we look forward to seeing you next year, the last Sunday of July, for the 29th running.
Please stay healthy and happy, and please come back next year. We will leave you with this quote from Damon Douglas, written in a letter some years ago to a friend. "What is it like when a day of running ends and I come down out of the mountains? Though my thighs are not always able to lift the foot high enough to avoid stubbing that right big toe, I am strong. With my limbs caked with mud and my clothes soaked with sweat, I am clean. Though fatigue pulses through every nerve, I am well rested. With my skin torn from brambles and from poking Balsam fir, I am whole. And as to living longer? My birth certificate shows that I've been around for 46 years, but the mountains and I are eternal. We will visit together as often as I can manage. And one peaceful day, I will return home for ever.
See you next year!
Dick and Cody Vincent
