Notes: Most early distances have been estimated from time comparisons for given runners on other courses, reported adjustments
to the courses, and other means. The 1897 course was laid out using bicycle cyclometers to be 25 miles however
a recent analysis of the original route by Hugh Farey indicates the distance was
23.93 mi (38.51 km). Measurements of the course were made in 1927 and again in 1957.
The 1957 measurement resulted in adding 1178 yds (0.67 mi or 1.08 km) to the existing course. The 1927 measurement
was state-of-the-art at that time and may be considered accurate. However, over the years, course alterations apparently
led to a gradual shortening of the course to 25.544 miles in 1957. The course for the 1957 and subsequent races
was at least the marathon distance (42.195 km) . The courses used for the 1963-1966 courses were reported to be
98 meters long; the 1985 course was reported to be 43.4 meters long. The courses used for the 1986 and subsequent
races include the short course prevention factor that "adds" 42.2 meters to the course to insure that
a validation measurement will not show the course to less than the marathon distance.
