2005 Colonie Mile

2005 Colonie Mile

by Chris Rush

Tuesday, July 12, Colonie, NY: another hot, humid summer evening and time again for the annual HMRRC Colonie Mile – the lone chance for the faster twitch contingent to sneak away with a few Grand Prix points.  This marked the 22nd running of the Colonie Mile, and the 39th year that the extraordinary series of recreational track meets have been made available to the running community by the Town of Colonie Parks and Recreation Department.

The CM is not for the faint of heart or the claustrophobic.  It took five large heats to accommodate the 217 individuals, athletes of all ages, shapes and sizes, who wanted to test their mettle on this hot and muggy evening.  The fourth of five heats actually sent off 62 runners with the crack of starter Don Romano’s gun.  The other four heats saw off the following numbers of runners: 34 (1st heat), 42 (2nd heat), 31(3rd heat), and 48 (5th heat).  A small handful of the truly hard core actually ran in more than one heat.

Not all of the 217 runners were actually competing in the HMRRC Colonie Mile.  Of all that toed the starting line, less than half, 98 registered their finish times for the club event.

The heat and humidity did not seem to bother the lead runners in the first heat, which was designated for those hoping to break 5 minutes and 30 seconds.  The anticipated match-up between the eventual overall winner, Brian Rhodes-Devey, and the previous week’s winner in 4:13, Rob Cloutier, recently of University of Tennessee and a graduate of Shenendahowa did not materialize. However, Rhodes-Davey’s CM winning time of 4:20.8 was indeed impressive for the 16-year-old from Guilderland High School. HMRRC President Bob Irwin turned in a classy 4:29.7 to take the men’s Sub-masters’ (30-9) group, while Derek Staley continued to dominate the 40-9 year-olds with a 4:39.9.  Rob Colburn won the 50-9 title in 5:08.7, with Saratoga’s Stan Westoff taking over the 60-9 year-olds in 6:05.1.  Wade Stockman won the 70 plus men (which Bob McFarland has successfully tagged as the “Jurassics”) in a respectable 6:50.

The women were not to be outdone in performance excellence.  Lisa Daniello, a Niskayuna High School grad currently competing for Marist College, led the Open women in 5:07.3 Emily Bryans took Sub-master honors in 5: 20.4.  Nancy Taromena, (5:50.7) was the women’s Masters winner.  Cynthia Finnegan (6:48.4) won the 50-59, and HMRRC Hall-of-Famer Annie Stockman swept up the rest in 8:08.4.

Ken Skinner once again served as “Race Director” for the event, with the assistance of Ed Neiles.  The customary iced Gator-ade was appreciated by all.  Last of all, a very special note of thanks should go to the regular crew that make the Colonie meets happen year after year: Frank Myers, Sandy Morley, Mary Beth Steffen, Lynn Ogren, Doug Hadley and Don Romano.  What a gift to the running community!
