Running in unseasonably warm conditions, Martin Lel and Margaret Okayo scored the second consecutive Kenyan sweep at the ING New York City Marathon. The 27 year-old Okayo, who won here in 2001, reached the finish line in Central Park in 2:22:31, shattering her own course record by nearly two minutes. Lel, winner of last month's World Half Marathon championship, broke from defending champion Rodgers Rop in the final mile to win in 2:10:30. As they did last year, the elite women started 35 minutes before the rest of the field. But unlike 2002, the pace was much quicker from the outset, and the anticipated assault on Okayo's 2:24:21 course record began almost immediately. After an opening 6:06 uphill mile to the crest of the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, a lead group of 15 quickly created a thirty-meter gap on the rest of the field, and when pacers Leah Malot and Olga Romanova reached the 10-K point in 34:14, 11 others --led by Okayo and Lornah Kiplagat-- were still within seven seconds of the lead, well ahead of course record pace. The next few miles saw the lead group reduced to seven --Okayo, Kiplagat, 1999 winner Adriana Fernandez, 200 winner Ludmila Petrova, master runner Firaya Sultanova-Zhdarova, world champion Catherine Ndereba, and defending champion Joyce Chepchumba. Marla Runyan, fourth here last year, was among the lead group initially, but dropped about 30 seconds back after getting tangled up with Ndereba at a fluid station. Later, a hip flexor problem would knock her out of contention. Okayo looked strongest when the field reached the half in 1:12:04, and when she reached Manhattan's First Avenue coming off the Queensboro Bridge, the 92-pound Kenyan would patienly turn the race into a battle for second. "I made the second push to see whether they were going to respond," Okayo said, "but by good luck I went, and they didn't push again. I was not sure whether they would come again. I was just relying on my own legs." Okayo and Kiplagat left Petrova behind after following up a 5:05 17th mile with a 5:13 in the 18th. Ndereba narrowed the gap in the next two miles to move into third, but Okayo surged ahead for good with a 5:02 split in the 21st mile, to finish unchallenged, crushing her course record by 1:50 in the process. Ndereba, who won August's world championship, overtook Kiplagat in the 22nd mile to finish second in 2:23:04, with Kiplagat third in 2:23:43. The two also bettered the previous course record of 2:24:21. Petrova, who won here in 2000, held on for fourth in 2:25:01, ahead of compatriot Lyubov Denisova who was fifth in 2:25:59. Ndereba pulled ahead of Kiplagat in the 23 mile and held on for second 2:23:03, forty seconds in front of Kiplagat. Ndereba, the former world record holder, was gracious in defeat. "Margaret was running so great," she said, not at all disappointed with a runner-up finish in her second appearance at New York. Less than 11 weeks after her win at August's World Championships, Ndereba said she was a little bit concerned about her ability to bounce back. "I was hoping just to see how I could perform. "I had that in my mind." Okayo, who also beat Ndereba to win the Boston Marathon in 2002, earned $100,000 (and a smart car) for the win, plus an additional $60,000 for her sub-2:23:00 effort. With a $50,000 sub-2:23:30 bonus, Ndereba, still the second fastest woman ever over the distance, netted $95,000 for the day. Unlike the women's race, which was fast from the outset, the men's was exceedingly tactical, with an unusually large lead pack of about 25 still very much in contention when master's ace Jackson Kipng'ok led through the half in a conservative 1:05:38. When the pack spread out dramatically by the 22nd mile, the only certainty to emmerge was that the winner would be from Kenya. With seven consecutive sub-5:00 miles between the 17th and 23rd, Lel, Rop and last year's runner-up, Christopher Cheboiboch, steadily built a lead that would go unchallenged. While Rop appeared to be controlling much of the race's second half, Lel stayed with him, and, running stride-for-stride, they left Cheboiboch behind entering the 24th mile. Rop, who finished a distant seventh in Boston earlier this year, faded badly in the final mile, paving the way for Lel's first major marathon win. Rop held on for second (2:11:11), twenty seconds ahead of Cheboiboch. "When I took him," Lel said of his move for the front in the 25th mile, "I was excited because I didn't know if I would be able to drop him. At the same time, I was really happy because I didn't think I would be able to win this race." Lel left New York $108,000 richer, and he too, took home a smart car. It was the first marathon win in three attempts for the 24 year-old Lel, whose third place showing in Boston earlier this year followed up his 2:10:02 debut from last October's Venice Marathon, where he finished second. While the warm weather may not have had as strong an impact as the predicted 70+ degree forecast, some did say that the 61 degree start temperature did have an impact. "Today it was hot, and I think it affected the time," Cheboiboch said. "I was in better shape than last year, but I got a stich in my side at 35-K, and that forced me back a little." North Carolina-based Elly Rono, who was third as late as mile 22, was among the day's biggest surprises, finishing fourth in 2:11:31, ahead of the Italian duo of Alberico Di Cecco (2:11:40) and Ottavio Andriani (2:13:10). Besides Sylvia Mosqueda's (2:33:10) tenth place showing and Jenny Crain's PB 2:38:49 (see below), it was not a good day for Americans. Matt Downin (2:18:48) was 17th in his marathon debut, while Phillimon Hanneck (2:20:12) was 21st in his. Scott Larson (2:23:10) was 26th, and Clint Wells (2:34:17) 55th. For the women, Jen Rhines was 17th (2:43:01), Marla Runyan (2:45:12) 20th, and Kim Pawelek (2:45:20) 21st.

Marathon Notebook...
... Spaniard Julio Rey, silver medallist at August's world championships, was tripped up in the crowd at the fluid station in the fourth mile, fell, twisted his ankle, and spoke at the post-race press conference from a wheelchair. "I feel really sad because I felt that I was in pretty good form and that I was going to win."
... 42 year-old Firaya Sultanova-Zhdanova seemed intent on breaking Priscilla Welch's 2:26:51 masters record, but dropped dramatically in the second half and finished 11th in 2:33:57...
... Jenny Crain, who was 16th overall and the second American across the line, lowered her PB to 2:38:49. Though clearly pleased with a PB on the New York course, the 36 year-old suggested that she might skip the Spring US Olympic Marathon Trials.
"I see myself having more strength as a 10-K runner on the track," said the Wisconsin native who now lives and trains in Eugene, Oregon. "With the marathon trials in April, and the track trials in July, I think that those two, for me personally, are a little too close to do both."
... Jen Rhines reached her goal of 1:14:00 for the first half, but then things started falling apart. "When I reached First Avenue (mile 16), I was only able to get one more good mile in," she said, after cramping in her calves and quads set in on the Queensboro Bridge. After her performance here, Rhines too believes she may focus on the 10,000m in 2004, but isn't ready to give up on the longer distance. "I do still think someday I'm going to run a good marathon."
... By most accounts, the marathon "debut" by Hip Hop artist/fashion designer/entrepreneur Sean 'P. Diddy' Combs was an unabashed success. After his 4:14:54 run, Combs said, "Never in my life have I ever experienced anything as crazy as this." Combs, who said he raised $2 million for three charities, trained just nine weeks. When cramping set in after 15 miles, he said he "definitely wanted to stop. This is definitely a life-changing experience for me because I didn't stop."
