STOCKMANS AND BOSTON COLLEGE TANDEM PACE DYNAMIC DUO SILVER ANNIVERSARY; MINDEL DISAPPOINTED

By Des ert Rose

Meet director Frank Myers created a new age division (109+) as an inducement for long- time assistant Mike Caccuitto and his wife to run the 2003 edition of the Duo. Wade and Anny Stockman were the main beneficiaries of the new age group, however, as they set an all-time record with their 10th Duo success. Their win broke the tie of 9 victories they shared with Denise Herman and Frank. Talk about longevity. The Stockmans won their first Dynamic Duo in 1979, the race's inaugural year.

Outstanding performances were achieved by many of the 70 teams who competed in the 25th Duo but none was better than the one turned in by the Boston College team of Brian Mahoney and Jen Kramer (Colonie).

Brian edged Shenendehowa star Phil Roach by 13 seconds as the men ran first this year and Jen lengthened their lead as they cruised to the overall crown by 35 seconds and the 37-45 age group title by 1:50 seconds over the talented team of Dan Kohler and Kate Twarog. Kate ran 18:26, the 3rd fastest female time of the day. The Mahoney-Kramer team's time of 32:44 is the 4th fastest time ever run and Jen's time of 17:07 makes her the 3rd fastest girl of all time behind Duo legends Lori Hewig and Tonya Dodge.

Former Niskayuna star Paul John and current Niskayuna phenom Caitlyn McTague were 2nd overall as they won the hotly contested 36 and under age group. John and McTague beat such talented teams as 2002 winners Krong and Krong, Roach and Kennedy, Breslin and Reepmeyer, Pilintko and Rogers, Grout and Tibbitts, Gadje and Soblosky and others too numerous to mention. In all there were 22 entries in this "loaded" age group.

Derek Staley, Steve Cummings and John Furgele don't know many women and Julie and Tracey LaFrano don't know many men so they all needed help getting partners. Well-known "broker" Dale Broomhead got Julie for Derek, Frank Myers got Tracey for Steve, and John snared Joan Paul after Joan left her phone number at a Tuesday Nite Track Meet. All three couples won their age groups. John and Joan won the 46-54 division, Steve and Tracey were victorious in the 55-63 age group, and Derek and Julie repeated their 2000 victory in the 64-72 division.

Frank Myers thought he was Dale's equal as a matchmaker and offered to get Scott Mindel a partner. Scott is one of the best high school runners in Section 2 but was briefly ill and thought he wouldn't be able to run the race so he didn't secure his own partner. At a Tuesday Nite Track Meet, Frank asked Jen Kramer to run with Scott. Jen demured saying, "Since Brian is my first boyfriend, he won't let me talk to other males much less run with them." Frank next thought of Kate Twarog who obviously is rounding into shape after three injury- plagued seasons at Colonie and Providence College. Kate said thanks but no thanks. Scott ended up being severely disappointed and acted as a volunteer instead of running. Scott has vowed to never let a Colonie runner ever beat him again and that includes Kramer and Twarog. Scott's father, Mark, was also disappointed saying, "Running the Duo without Scott is like running the Travers without Funny Cide."

Chuck Racey didn't need any help getting a partner. Chuck teamed with Sue Whitney to dominate the 73-81 age division. The Racey/Whitney tandem won by over six minutes.

Gary Czupil didn't think he was in shape to help Nancy Nicholson win their 3rd Duo and Nancy's 11th (with eight different partners) so he got his buddy Tom White to run with her. The result was predictable. Nancy and Tom won the 82-90 division but what's the surprise? Nancy wins with any and all partners. The only partner she couldn't carry in recent memory was Colonie Recreation Department boss Don Myers. Carrying Bob Oates would be a major accomplishment if they ever joined up. The Myers-Nicolson duo lost in 1994. All right, Nancy didn't win with Mohonasen Athletic Director Tim McNamara in 1997 but she won in 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, and this year.

Martha DeGrazia, like Nancy, also enjoys a variety of men. Martha has won four Duos since 1992. She has been victorious with Lee Wilcox, Paul Bennett (twice) and Dennis Fillmore. Martha and Paul won this year's 100-108 age group.

Like Martha and Nancy, Paul believes variety is the spice of life. Paul now has a string of four victories in the only four Duos he has run. His fast females included Martha, Christina Bensi, and Janice Roche.

Nancy Malkiewicz entered the Duo early with her husband John but an ankle injury put him on the shelf. Nancy secured substitute Rick Morse as they won the 91-99 age division over the Mark Mindel/Mary Beth Hollinger team and the Dale Broomhead/Mary Beth Steffen squad. Broomhead and Steffen won in 2002. Mary Beth has not missed a Duo since she started running the race in 1985 and has lost every one but last year's. The Boston Red Sox would be proud. A wise guy at the pool (one of Mary Beth's former students) looked at the results and noticed that his boss Dale could have won the 82-90 age-group with Nancy Nicholson and wanted to know why he has "brokered" some of Nancy's wins instead of running with her. Dale refused to comment within earshot of this reporter.

Attendance for this year's Duo was up 22 teams from last year. It's good to see familiar names like McTague, Krong, Hollinger, Davey, Macri, Maswick, Steciuk, Giglio, Bashant, Powers, Klemp, Bulger, Cochran, Pilato, Hillard, Hillengas, Hoffman, McFarland, Pezzula, White, the Shenendehowa, Shaker, Scotia, Averill Park, Niskayuna and Colonie current runners, graduates and coaches and other people who enter this unique race in most years.

The quality of the race was also up over last year. Three teams made the all-time top 50 times list. Like mentioned before, the Mahoney/Kramer squad made #4. In addition, the John/McTague tandem became #11 and the Kohler/Twarog team are now #47. Individually, Kramer has the 7th fastest female time ever and McTague now has the 9th fastest woman's effort.

As always, many thanks to the volunteers who get the results out and the awards presented in a timely manner. The race couldn't have gone on without Mark Mindel, Bob Oates, Karl Steffen, Lynne Ogren, Ellen Snee, Scott Mindel, Nancy Nisiewicz, Sandy Morley, Gary Czupil and Don Myers and the Colonie Recreation Department crew.
