BOSTON (15-Apr) -- Kenyans Rodgers Rop and Margaret Okayo won today's 106th
BAA Boston Marathon upsetting the defending champions. Rop ran a career
best time of 2:09:02 while Okayo smashed Uta Pippig's 1994 course record by
63 seconds, running 2:20:43.
Rop pulled away from compatriot Christopher Cheboiboch near the 21 mile
mark, and appeared to have a comfortable lead on the final finishing
straight. But Cheboiboch would not give up.
"I thought I could catch him," said Cheboiboch, who was nonetheless happy
with his second place finish. "It was my personal best."
Rop, who placed second at the New York City Marathon last fall in his debut
at the distance, was confident in his preparations for the race. "I think I
prepared very well in Kenya," he said, adding that he had done four weeks of
final speed training in Germany.
Okayo won a two-woman duel with two-time defending champion and world record
holder, Catherine Ndereba. The pair broke clear of Sun Yingjie of China and
Elfenesh Alemu of Ethiopia in the in the 17th mile, and they were running
well under course record pace. Ndereba followed her shorter rival, waiting
to use his strong kick at the finish.
She would not get the chance.
In the 25th mile, Okayo surged hard and Ndereba could not respond. She
immediately gained a ten meter lead, and sailed to the finish line with a
course record, and a time equaling the fourth-fastest ever by a woman.
Ndereba finished second in 2:21:12, also under Pippig's course record.
"I was not suspecting to run that fast," said Okayo, explaining that she had
prepared well in Italy under Dr. Gabriele Rosa. "I knew the training was
enough to run well here."
