Phil Carducci's Italian ancestry must be connected back to the Island of Sicily. Why? Because Sicily is surrounded by water, and on Saturday Altamont was not only surrounded by water, but covered with it too. Some race directors get all the luck! Here I direct cross-country meets, and I get one boring blue-sky day meet after meet. Phil throws a road race and gets ideal XC conditions. Go figure. I sure hope he bought a Megabucks ticket Saturday.
Got to give Mr. Carducci credit, he knows how to throw a good road show out at the Altamont Fair Grounds (sight of an infamous Rolling Stones Concert?). The first year it was urinating pachyderms (very well hydrated they are), and now it's runners entering the Ark's chute two by two.
So Mr. Carducci gets everyone out to the starting line and promptly disappears into the pace fire truck, leaving some fella to start the race by saying, "go". Very subtle approach applied here. And then the fun starts as Team Utopia's Jamie Rodriguez takes off and easily out distances the lumbering fire truck. So Jamie ends up pacing the fire truck; they both quickly disappear from the view of us mere mortals, leaving us to ponder what running fast is all about. Jamie is fresh off of smoking the Tour du Parc 5K XC course record in 16:00 flat, taking 46 seconds off Tom Dalton's previous course record. Mr. Dalton also owns the Tour du Parc 8K course record of 25:40, established when he finished 1:54 ahead of the second finisher. Should be interesting come this September 29 when the two of them clash head to head, on the TDP 8K course, in the USATF Adirondack Association XC Championships. Throw in teams from Willow Street, Adirondack AC, and Utopia butting heads and you have the makings of one very fast XC meet. But I digress, back to Altamont. We do the breaststroke for a mile and come to a "water station", I figure this must be some kind of cruel joke by Mr. Carducci; we take a right and head for Altamont. We backstroke towards Altamont another mile and come to cruel joke "water station" number two. What a sense of humor Mr. Carducci has. Another right turn and were heading through the heart of Atlantis, I mean Altamont, where we encounter cars. I'm running along side a car when the rear window comes down and a little girl asks "what are you doing", "running in a race" I answer, "it's raining" comes the reply. She's in the dry car; I'm out in the pouring rain, nuff said.
Up ahead looms the finish line meaning two things, the end and race results. Or does it? Is there anything more disheartening than having to watch Sharon Boehlke hobbling around trying to track down "bandits" with bibs? Where is Chet with a shotgun when you need him? So how can someone with a bib end up being a bandit? It seems a fairly significant number of registered runners have removed their bib tags before the race. So Sheriff Sharon has to try and track them down. When it comes to race management the first thing that goes out the window is common sense. I can commiserate with her; I recently did the results for a race where we ended up with one more bib tag than times. Despite multiple checks of times and tags we came up with one extra tag every time. Then we find out that one runner turned in two tags. Seems a friend ran the course before the race and gave his tag to a runner actually in the race. When I say disheartening to watch Sharon it is because she is just off of surgery for a broken foot suffered in the Indian Ladder Trail Run. Speaking of Sharon, has anyone in the Capital District done more to pay the country club dues of doctors in the last couple of years than Sharon?
The usual post race amenities of refreshments (lots of "Nantucket Nectar" juices no less), awards, raffles, and acupuncture, are held in a barn. So we're out of the rain. Mr. Carducci is the MC and does a nice job of it. What a haul of raffle prizes this Altamont 5K offers. Hotel weekends (honeymoon suite, what a helpless romantic this Mr. Carducci is), restaurant meals, tickets to Mets games (how many games in a row have they lost?), tickets to Diamond Dogs games (higher caliber of ball than the afore mentioned Mets), a dozen bagels for Martha DeGrazia, and on and on. And I win a CD. I get to pick from a spread out assortment of CDs. Now I don't want to date myself, but I'm not a teenager anymore. I check out the assortment, and I don't recognize the name of one group or singer. So I ask a teenage girl which ones are good. She points to three, I ask her to narrow it down, and she points to one. I take it home and my teenage daughters OK my pick of Enriques's CD "Escape". The titles of the songs is a fairly boring sounding lot, along the likes of "I Love You", "I Miss You", you're this and that, etc, etc. Where is Dan Hicks (of "Dan Hicks and His Hot Licks" fame) when you need him? Dan came up with such ditties as "How Can I Miss You When You Won't Go Away", and "I Scare My Self Just Thinking About You". Plus I win an award for being second in the Old Dogs age category. So I've managed to avail myself of refreshments, raffle, and an award. I pass on the opportunity to be Moby Dick for the acupuncturist.
While were in the barn word spreads that "Willow Street" is being sponsored by "Red Bull" (a couple of cans of that stuff before the start and you'll run faster than a Kenyan for awhile). This news causes me to remember that at the Lake George to Bolton Landing Race there were two very attractive young women giving out samples of Red Bull. Just a coincidence, or is there a connection ????? Not to be outdone, Team Utopia, having a quorum present, votes to be sponsored by "Northeast Pest Control". New team jerseys will be yellow with the new team name "Team Pests" in black. The Bull part of this is true, the Utopia part is bull, as an author is allowed a little poetic license here and there.
Just when it seemed a fine day of enjoying Mr. Carducci's hospitality was to be successfully concluded, disaster strikes. I hike out to my car, which is parked on a sloping grass field in which the driving lanes have turned into an absolute quagmire of mud. It is now pouring cats, dogs, and whatever other kinds of animals fall out of the sky when it rains in Altamont. I discover I have to cross one of the lanes of mud to get to my car. As I do so my legs go out from under me and down I go, butt first into the mud. Extracting myself from the mire I walk the few remaining steps to my car. I can't sit on the seat with the butt side of my running shorts covered in mud. But (pun intended) what am I to do? So…… I open both driver's side car doors to create a vanity screen, peel off my shorts, throw them on the floor, and I jump in. Once inside I peel off my singlet, and put on my nice dry "Altamont 5K' tee-shirt. I then tool off for home attired semi au natural. And don't I get stopped by a woman police officer. Fini.
