The American Championships were first held in 1876 under the jurisdiction of the New York Athletic Club (NYAC). They were held under the auspices of the National Association of Amateur Athletes of America (NAAA) from 1879-88, the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) from 1888-1979, the Athletic Congress of the USA (TAC) from 1980-92 and USA Track and Field (USATF) since 1993. The 1920, 1928, 1932, 1996 & 2000 championships incorporated the Olympic Trials, otherwise held as a discrete event. The following section lists certified winners of standard individual United States Championship events who happen to have a local connection.
